Video games may seem like necessity for pre teens and teenage boys. Like the internet, television, or Netflix, video games can be a fun easy way to relax, hang out, and pass time with friends. However, many issues arise with video games that are too violent. One of these games is known as Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes; a video game where the players attempt to complete missions while avoiding the given enemy. There are a total of seven missions, as the players unlock missions they begin to win the game. These missions include eliminating targets or obtaining classified information.
However, many controversial topics arise when one discovers inappropriate sound effects and events happen within each mission. For example, one character known as "Chico" ( a thirteen year old boy) is forced to rape another known as "Paz" (a twenty-five year old woman.) Furthermore, the main unrestrained and cruel character in the game is "Skullface." Skullface appears to be a zombie that is evil just for the sake of it. His role in the video game is to torture, interrogate, and rape other characters. The sound effects involving this character include whipping, forced sex, and gang rape. Another disturbing scene is when Skullface punishes Paz by inserting a bomb in her vagina and stomach. Furthermore, when characters are attempting to remove the bomb from inside the woman, they do not give her any anesthetics, making her pain even more realistic. The creators seem to have an obsession with putting the only woman in the video game though as much pain as possible.
The creator of the video game, Hideo Kojima, acknowledged the upset subscribers but replied to their complaints by saying, "I did kind of see it coming that people would react to this. But it doesn't change I want to relay." Therefore explaining that he wanted people to understand Snake's need to destroy the Phantom of Pain. (Snake being the character every gamer uses to complete the missions.)
There has been many research performed on the effects of violence in video games on the youth. One study showed that children with the greatest risk to engage in physical fighting were boys who:
-have a high hostile attribution bias
-have been involved in fights previously
-play a lot of violent video games
-whose parents are not apart of their media habits.
This study also showed that those who have a higher exposure to violent video games are 80% more likely to engage in physical fighting while those who have a lower exposure only have a 47% chance to engage in physical fights. Therefore, this is further proving that many of these video games are unnecessary and inappropriate. However this is a whole other side to this argument. Another study showed the positive effects from violent video games:
-improved cognitive skills such as memory, perception, reasoning, and spacial navigation
-enhanced abilities to problem solve
-growth in creativity
-helps kids act normally in social situations
-helps kids connect with others
Overall, are violent video games ultimately bad for teenagers or good? There might not be an answer.
